[Some time around mid-afternoon, Ruby'll feel her amulet buzz with the sign of a message being left for her. Not a telepathic call, but a voice message that she can listen to whenever she has some time. The voice'll be instantly familiar.]

[Yang's tone is as cheerful as she can manage, but there's no mistaking the timbre of somebody who is...pretty bummed.]
Hope everybody's totally spoiling you rotten today. ...Hope the weather's nicer up there today too. Rain on your birthday'd kinda suck...
I uh...I guess I was sorta hoping we'd maybe...magically fix stuff up down here and I'd be able to make it home before the end of the day but...we're still down here. [Strained.] Trying to get these stupid temple doors open. If uh...[A small laugh.]...If Ozpin ever needs some ideas for new security at the Huntsmen academies...should definitely take a trip out here, am I right?
[Ha ha...ha...ahhh...]
I'm sorry...that I couldn't be there for your birthday.
[Again.]
But. [More reassuringly.] As soon as I'm back? We'll have a big celebration. Xiao Long-Rose style. Team RWBY style, Beacon style, all of them, whatever you want. And I'll bring you back something cool while I'm down here.
[Warmly.] I'm so proud of you, Ruby. I know I say that all the time, but I mean it. I've always meant it. ...Every day, I'm just...so glad. That I had a baby sister like you to grow up with. [A pause and then another weak laugh.] Even though you're definitely not a baby anymore.
...I love you, Ruby. [Another small pause, and Yang's voice sounds a little stronger this time.] Anyway, I'm gonna wrap this up before I totally get all mushy and embarrassing on you.
[ Ruby listens to the message, oh, half a dozen times, and only cries during a few of them. Yang may not be here for her birthday, but Ruby knows it's not for any lack of care or concern on her sister's part. When she listens to this, she feels so warm and loved, and all the more excited for Yang to get back so they can celebrate, even if ti's not on her birthday.
After all, it's not the day itself that counts as much as the people you spend it with. ]
