[ when jaune has found penny and brought her back to the house, she does a bit of thinking before she walks up to ruby's room. this wasn't going to be easy to talk about... but it wasn't like she could run away from it forever. at the end of the day, ruby was still her friend. this was just a hiccup in their friendship.
a very large, death-ridden hiccup.
she takes a deep "breath", clenches her fist, and knocks on ruby's closed bedroom door. ]
[ Ruby's been doing...better, since there very-brief confrontation, thanks in no small part to Yang and Weiss keeping her busy. Ruby knows they need to talk again, and the first feeling that floods her when she opens her door is relief that Penny is standing there at all. It'd been impossible not to worry about her, even if Ruby knew she'd needed...time.
But her stomach curdles as uncertainty arrives hot on the heels of that relief, and Ruby's mouth curves into a soft frown. So...it's time, then. ]
[ It doesn't take a genius to figure out what Penny must be here to talk about, so although her expression is grim, Ruby nods. ]
Come on in.
[ She swings the door wide for Penny to follow her in, and she pulls out a desk chair before sits crosslegged on the floor. She'd offer the bed to Penny to sit on but its...suspended from the ceiling. ]
How've...you been? We haven't had a chance to talk much lately...
[ she looks to the desk chair, stares at it for a moment, and then joins ruby on the floor, sitting on her knees. ]
I'm...
[ she pauses again. though it's a simple question, her answer is a bit loaded. sure, she's physically fine, but emotionally? this might be one of the most confusing moments of her short life.
it comes out all at once. her eyes avoid ruby's, obscured by her bangs as she stares at the ground. ]
I'm very sorry for running away like I did. I was confused, and very upset, and... I wasn't sure what to do...
[ It's okay that Penny doesn't meet her eyes, because Ruby can't meet hers right now either. There's so much she should say but she can't quite formulate the words yet, her mind floundering in everything she's feeling. It's hard to not feel overwhelmed. ]
Oh, Penny... [ Her fingers tighten on the hem of her skirt. ]
You don't have anything to be sorry for. It's me who should be apologizing.

I had some time to think about it. All of you were trying to protect me, right? Because... you didn't want to see me hurt?
[ at least, that's what she gathered from the advice of the people she spoke to. she's resolved herself to give ruby and her friends the benefit of the doubt. ]
[ Ruby just looks at Penny for a moment - really looks at her, hurting and open and feeling, and it's a firm reminder that Penny is just as human as she is, no matter what's inside of her. She can hurt just as much...and Ruby doesn't want to be responsible for causing her pain like that again. Not ever. ]
That's what I want, too. I promise, Penny...I won't keep a secret like that from you ever again.
[ it's times like these where her lack of humanity is most pronounced - she's aware of the concept of tears, but can't shed any herself. it almost feels as though there's an ache in her circuits, though it isn't particularly unpleasant. it's something akin to relief, knowing that ruby is that dedicated to their friendship.
what she can do, however, is smile. there's happiness underlying all of this, and she wants to communicate it. there's a pause for a moment as she considers how to act next, but only seconds pass before she throws herself forward into a hug. ]
[ Ruby is only too glad to accept that hug, and everything unspoken that comes with it. Tears bud at her eyes and spill out against Penny's hair, her shoulders shaking gently. It's so good to have the awful discomfort that has existed between them dealt away with, and for the first time since Penny showed up, Ruby really feels...at peace, no longer conflicted about weight of the secrets she's been bearing. ]
I'm so glad you're here, Penny.
[ She can't say it enough, and now Penny fully understands why. ]
[ while penny's hugs are usually a little harsh and uncoordinated, this one is filled with the kind of warmth that only someone with a soul could muster. the emotions between them, previously running high, have relaxed into relief and release of tension. on the floor around them, small beds of yellow roses begin to bloom. ]
I'm glad to be here - with you, and everyone else.
[ glad to be alive, but that much goes unsaid - it only feels right to let ruby cry it out. even if the synthetic fibers of her hair get wet with tears, she doesn't mind. ]

Penny?

[ unlike her usual chipper demeanor, penny looks very nervous now. for a moment she can't even meet ruby's eyes, but wills herself to do so. ]
Can... I talk to you?

I didn't want to hurt you like that.

[ penny is fidgeting in much the same way, but she manages to gather up the courage to look directly at ruby. she hopes that her eyes will be met. ]
